One of the newest additions to the realm of extracurricular study at Seymour High School is the student internship program, headed by Business teacher Cathy Reasoner. This program provides juniors and seniors with the opportunity to experience their chosen career or path of study by allowing them to leave school early each day for a semester. While out of school, students go to a place of business in the community that mirrors their job interest.
Through their internship, students learn, explore, and verify their interests through hands-on and practical experiences in a work environment. “Basically it is an opportunity for students to see what they’re interested in,” said Reasoner.
By taking part in this internship, students can experience first-hand what their job of choice will be like. Senior Alex Craig is a marketing intern at Valeo Sylvania, where he primarily works with Excel. “The hands-on experience of being in an office is very beneficial … I love it,” said Craig.
The internship program also creates constructive work habits and expertise that employers find favorable. Junior Adam Lenart interns in Business teacher Missy Lake’s room at SHS where he mostly works on adding sections to student web pages, writing articles and adding photos to web pages. “Colleges will be impressed that I took an internship for programming a website in school. In the job-hunt I will be more open to anything that needs to be done,” said Lenart.
This program also offers learning experiences that students would not be able to obtain in a classroom environment. Senior Payton Warren interns at Schneck Medical Marketing Building. There she compares and contrasts brochures, works on proper logo usage and guidelines as well as works on videos and testimonies used to promote Schneck Hospital. Warren said that this program will help her know what she is getting into by gaining experience.
“It benefits you in the aspect of hands-on experience,” said Warren.
