National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a health campaign promoted all over the country. It is put together every October by some of the major breast cancer charities in the United States. According to the NBCAM website, NBCAM was founded in 1985 as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the Pharmaceutical division of Imperial chemical industries. NBCAM exists to make people aware of the disease and to help them learn how to examine themselves. NBCAM and 16 participating organizations are currently helping to fight the battle against breast cancer.
When NBCAM was founded their goal was to teach people that mammograms are one of the most effective weapons to fight breast cancer.  Mammograms are low energy-X-rays used to check the breasts for cancer.
The symbol of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is the pink ribbon. It was made in 1993 by Evelyn Lauder, the founder of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
